Six most savage football pundits ranked with Roy Keane missing out on top spot

July 2024 · 6 minute read

There's more and more football on TV than ever before, but it's not always the game itself that makes the headlines.

Increasingly, it's the pundits - often former pros themselves - who are the subject of heated debate on social media after the match.

Whether it's Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's ranting on Monday Night Football, or Roy Keane and Graeme Souness going at it like wildebeest on Super Sunday, pundits are fast becoming the real stars of the show.

Everyone has their favourite, but who's the most savage pundit of them all? Daily Star Sport has taken a look - and reached a surprising conclusion.

6. Simon Jordan

Thanks to his appearances on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has developed a reputation as a no-nonsense pundit who isn't willing to suffer fools gladly,

In recent weeks, the 53-year-old has attacked Nottingham Forest, Newcastle's survival chances, Dean Smith's managerial credentials and new Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

Jordan claimed the former Liverpool man didn't 'merit' the opportunity to take over at Villa Park, saying: "I don’t think he [Gerrard] has the credentials either.

"Neither one of these guys would walk through the door, if they were ‘Joe Schmo from nowhere’, not Frank Lampard, and not Steven Gerrard." Ouch.

5. Chris Sutton

Who do you think is the most savage football pundit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

It isn't so much that Chris Sutton is savage, rather he's just pretty miserable on a fairly consistent basis. That said, the former Celtic and Blackburn man certainly has his moments.

Referring to comments made by ex-Hoops boss Neil Lennon after Celtic's defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League, Sutton said: "Neil Lennon calling them kamikaze last night.

"I understand the criticism and we're here to analyse the style of play. But a lot of this mess was on Neil, and that's just the way it was.

"It's like somebody dumping a big lorryload of horse manure on your front garden, moving out next door and then complaining about the smell."

4. Gary Neville

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has won the hearts and minds of millions of football fans thanks to his excellent work on Sky Sports.

From his sharp analysis of the Premier League to his brutal takedown of the failed European Super League, the former England right-always gets on top of the biggest issues.

Often that includes poring over the travails of his former club, and while he may have been more reserved in calling out old colleague Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he hasn't shied away from criticising United as a whole.

The 46-year-old delivered a brutal assessment of the club's 5-0 defeat to Liverpool earlier this season, saying: "That was a shocker, an absolute shocker and the timing couldn’t have been worse because it’s been building now for a couple of weeks against what I’ve called half-decent teams.

"And as soon as they’ve played a proper team they’ve been obliterated, pulled to pieces, dismantled." He also accused United's stars of acting like "babies" after the 4-2 defeat to Leicester City in October.

3. Graeme Souness

As a player, Graeme Souness was well-known for his no-nonsense style. As a pundit, not much has changed.

The Liverpool great often tells it how it is - or at least, how he perceives it to be - and with no player is that more evident than United star Paul Pogba.

Souness has been on the Frenchman's case ever since he rejoined the Old Trafford club in 2016, famously telling him to put his "medals on the table" after a tete-a-tete last year.

In a previous exchange, he laid into Pogba by saying: "He goes out with one thought in his mind: 'I'm going to show everyone how clever I am today and be the star of the show.'

"My attitude, the way I was taught, was: 'Go out and work harder than the guy you're in against and see where that takes you.' He'd be an absolute doddle to play against."

2. Roy Keane

You only have to look at Roy Keane's comments about Harry Maguire for a recent example of the Irishman's brutal take on the game.

The former Red Devils skipper ripped into Maguire for his goal celebration against Albania, calling him "embarrassing" and labelling his recent performances for United as a "disgrace."

Keane also laid into the centre-half after the club's 5-0 defeat to Liverpool. Not content with mocking Maguire with a fake robot voice, the outspoken pundit added: "I’m fed up with this chat after games and people apologising.

"Harry Maguire was talking about, ‘We need to come together as a group.' No, you need to sort your game out. "If you’re gonna be the leader of that group you need to get the basics right, do your own job."

Keane's forthright approach to punditry has made him one of the nation's favourites, and thanks to his bromance with Micah Richards, we know he has a lighter side too.

1. Josep Pedrerol

It's probably not the name you were expecting to see at number one on our list, but there's no getting away from the utter savagery of El Chiringuito host Josep Pedrerol.

He might not be a household name in the UK, but anyone who's been on Twitter after a Real Madrid defeat in the Champions League will be familiar with the veteran broadcaster's rants.

The Spaniard, who makes Roy Keane seem like a cuddly teddy bear, is no respecter of reputation, as he showed when laying into Eden Hazard following Real's defeat to Chelsea last season.

"Real Madrid are out of Europe as Hazard finds time to laugh and joke," Pedrerol said as foreboding music played in the background.

"Two years of taking the p*** out of Real Madrid supporters, two years of being overweight, just another Gareth Bale. We are angry, we don’t understand him. He cannot stay at Real Madrid for another second."
