The final year of 1999 did not let us down, and the 1990s brought us some of the best films. The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, and The Mummy are just a few of the amazing movies that were given to us. We also witnessed the debut of fresh favorites like the actress Mena Suvari. Our attention was riveted by the doe-eyed beauty in two of 1999’s biggest blockbusters, American Beauty and American Pie.
Did Mena continue to perform in movies having the word “American” in the title? Did she return to watch any other American Pie movies? After all these years, let’s check in with Mena Suvari to see what she’s been up to.
Background info
In Newport, Rhode Island, on February 13, 1979, Mena Alexandra Suvari had her stage debut. Her parents are psychiatrist Ando Ivar Suvari and nurse Candice (Thompson) Suvari.
She is the family’s youngest child and only female, with three elder boys.
Later, her family relocated to South Carolina, where she attended the prestigious all-girls private Ashley Hall school in Charleston for her education.
Suvari relocated to California and graduated in 1997 from Providence High School in Burbank. At first, Mena wanted to grow up and work as an archaeologist. A close second would seem to be acting.
Acting career
Mena made her acting debut at the age of 15, but she had already been in a Rice-A-Roni advertisement and had been a model for the Millie Lewis Models and Talent Agency when she was a young adolescent before moving on to the Wilhelmina Agency.
Her debut appearances were on TV series including High Incident, ER, and Boy Meets World. In 1997’s dark teen independent dramedy Nowhere, she played Zoe in her debut motion picture. She starred in Kiss the Girls the same year as Morgan Freeman and Ashely Judd.
American Pie
When Mena was cast as Heather in the 1999 teen coming-of-age comedy American Pie, her career began to take off. She portrayed the innocent choir girl who attracted the star lacrosse player Oz’s interest. He pursued her, and by the end of the film, they were dating.
The film generated numerous sequels and instantly made the entire core cast famous. Mena returned for the second slice in American Pie 2, but she and a few other performers from the first two—including Chris Klein, who played her boyfriend Oz in the first two—did not appear in the third film, American Wedding. But for the 2012 film American Reunion, the concluding installment in the original series, she returned alongside the complete cast.
In her final two “American” movies of 1999, Mena played Katrina in the comedy American Virgin, which also starred Bob Hoskins.
American Beauty
Suvari received praise from critics for her performance as Angela Hayes in the Oscar-winning dark comedy American Beauty. Mena went on to be nominated for a SAG and a BAFTA for her work, earning her a SAG Award for Best Ensemble. The supporting cast also included Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, Allison Janney, and Peter Gallagher.
Suvari stuck with romantic comedies and independent movies, making appearances in movies like the 2000 adolescent rom-com Loser, where she co-starred in with Jason Biggs from American Pie, the 2001 teen black comedy, and the cult classic Sugar & Spice.
She would eventually land the role of a meth addict named Cookie in the 2002 film Spun, which was about the chaotic and wild world of amphetamine addicts.
What is Mena Suvari doing now?
But Mena also appeared in seven episodes of Six Feet Under, seven episodes of American Horror Story: Murder House, and seven episodes of Chicago Fire in season two.
Additionally, she made sporadic appearances throughout 2018 on programs including Inside Amy Schumer and American Horror Story: Apocalypse.
Mena released five films in 2022 alone, mostly low-budget independent movies that won’t win any awards but yet generate the same amount of revenue.
Suvari has five films in post-production and one that is now in development, so she isn’t slowing down.
Memoir
When she released her memoir, The Great Peace, in 2021, she added author to her list of accomplishments. She described her heartbreaking childhood in it, including how she felt neglected by her parents, how her mother left her, how she had to care for her elderly father, how she was raped at the age of 12 by a friend of her brother, how she was oversexualized by Hollywood before she was even a teenager, how she used drugs to get away from it all, and how she was preyed upon by older men.
Fan Conventions
She always finds time for the supporters who, in spite of all of her difficulties, keep Mena’s career going. In September 2021, she began appearing on the convention circuit, and in 2022, she made a few appearances.
Personal life
Mena’s private life reads something like a movie in and of itself. Her first marriage took place in 2000 to the cinematographer Robert Brinkmann, who was 16 years her senior. Only five years later, in 2005, the couple got a divorce.
In 2010, she married Simone Sestito, a concert organizer she had been dating since 2007. This was her second attempt at love. Sadly, Mena later filed for divorce, which was ultimately successful in the fall of 2012.
Suvari and Michael Hope first met in 2016 while working on the Hallmark film I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
After a low-key wedding in 2018, Mena said she was expecting their first child in 2020. In April 2021, they gave birth to a healthy child who was given the name Christopher Alexander Hope in honor of Michael’s late father.
We’re certain to witness some of Mena’s best work in the future because her personal and professional lives are on the right track and thriving.
