After her graduation, she envisioned becoming a prosecutor in the district attorney’s office. In 1997, she instead found work as an associate with the corporate law firm Bickel & Brewer and relocated to Chicago. During that time, Kelly co-wrote an article named The Conflicting Roles of Lawyer as Director for Litigation, the American Bar Association’s journal.
Kelly met a medical student Dan Kendall in Chicago. They married in September 2001. She continued her path as a corporate litigator at Jones Day, where she worked for nearly a decade. However, in 2003, her husband was hired by Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the couple relocated to Washington, DC.
In 2003, she joined WJLA TV as a freelance assignment reporter.
