Who is Bijou Phillips?

Bijou Phillips is an American actress, model and singer - her most notable film appearances include 'Almost Famous,' 'Bully' and 'Hostel: Part II'.

She was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on 1 April 1980, however neither of her biological parents raised her.

Bijou is the daughter of John Phillips, Mamas & The Papas musician and his third wife Geneviève Waïte.

As both parents were deemed unfit to take care of her, she was in New York's foster care system from age three.

In a 2018 Instagram post, she shared a snap of her and her foster father Derry and her foster sister Rita.

She explained that her parents 'spent years and years fighting for custody' so she 'bounced around a lot.'

In the caption she wrote 'I’m still really close with my foster family and love them so much. I’m going home to see them this summer.

'When I was a kid separated from my parents, I remember my mother coming and wanting to take me and just wanting to go with her so much and screaming and crying and griping the door.

'I was dragged inside it took two adults and the door closed. I didn't see her again for months.'

Bijou began to make headlines at just 13 years old as she was among the youngest models to make it to the pages of Interview Magazine and Italian Vogue.

She also appeared in in Calvin Klein ads, including a 1995 ad that stirred controversy and got immediate backlash for its teenage models, prompting a child pornography investigation.

It was dropped when the company provided proof that all the models were adults.

The model quit school at just 14 years old to move to a Fifth Avenue apartment in New York City, where she quickly established herself as a socialite on the party scene.

At this age, she legally emancipated herself from her drug-addicted parents after years of foster care.

She often made headlines for her excessive partying and friendships with other famous faces including Paris and Nicky Hilton.

At this time in her life, she became a 'wild child' who drank and took drugs including coke, ecstasy and heroin, according to the Observer.

The then 21-year-old Bijou told the publication in 2002 'I was 14 years old. What was I supposed to do?

'If you were 14 years old and able to live on your own in an apartment in New York City, and you got invited to all these clubs, and you got a bank account and you had a car service you could call so that you could go wherever you wanted... what would happen?'

Eventually, at age 17 her father encouraged her to go to rehab to get sober, following the heroin overdose death of her friend, socialite Davide Sorrenti, aged 20.

It was followed by a wave of other roles in films such as 'Choke' and 'The Door to the Floor' - she notably starred in the TV series 'Raising Hope' from 2010 to 2013.

However, on the set of the film 'Bully' which was released in 2001, Bijou was accused of 'body-shaming' and 'homophobia' and 'physical abuse' of her co-star Daniel Franzese, who's best known for his role as Damien in 'Mean Girls'.

He claimed she had taunted him for his sexuality, twisted his nipple and kicked him in the back of the head on the set of 'Bully'.

The actor later wrote on Twitter that Phillips had apologized for her actions and said that he forgave her, writing: 'I forgive because I don’t know her private story either. I shared this story only to bring light to a dark memory.'

How long have the pair been together?

Bijou met Danny Masterton at a poker tournament in Las Vegas in 2004, almost twenty years ago.

Five years later they were engaged and the couple got married in 2011 - they lived in a lavish mansion in Los Angeles.

In 2017, Masterton shared that his wife had been secretly battling a rare kidney condition for years.

One of her friends was a match and donated her kidney to the star.

Masterton thanked the 'angel' who gave his wife 'the gift of an encore' in an Instagram post that showed the couple holding hands across hospital beds.

Both Masterton and his wife are part of the Church of Scientology, as were the women that he raped.

During the sentencing Bijou sat with amid a group of Scientology friends and family members.

She broke down in tears as her husband was sentenced, immediately denied bail and led to the cells in handcuffs.

Now, 43-year-old Bijou is coming to terms with the prospect of raising her child alone.

A close friend exclusively told DailyMail.com that ' She is really trying to be strong for her daughter as she is trying to figure out life and what it will be like for her.

'It can only be compared to a divorce or a death for her not being able to be with Danny the way they were.'

Adding 'They had their life, and it has been completely uprooted and changed and change is as scary and miserable as one would imagine.

'Friends are trying to be there for her, but things are really tough.

'She is really trying to figure it all out and what her life will be after all things are said and done.

'Whatever happens with Danny will change her life forever and, in a not so dignified word, it just sucks.'
